The rumors have been going around for quite a while, but at last the Galaxy S8’s rugged version, S8 Active, has made its way to the markets.
The specs are practically the same as the recently shipped S8
- Snapdragon 835 chip.
- 12MP/ 8MP f/1.7 cameras.
- 64 GB base storage.
- 4 GB RAM.
- Measurements: S8 Active 151.9 x 74.9 x 9.9mm vs. Regular S8 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm
The S8 Active comes with a 5.8 inch AMOLED screen, but without the slanted edge infinity screen, which is one of the main selling points on the regular S8. This is the price to pay for a more robust and durable screen. On the bright side, there is apparently more room for a bigger battery, 4000mAh instead of the 3000 mAh you get on the regular model. That is an impressive 25% more capacity.
As to be expected, if you opt for a rugged phone with military-grade protection, then you will have to live with a bulkier design and a little more weight, 208.1g compared to 155g to be exact.
There will be no real surprises when opening the box, the phone should be there, including the short start guide, travel adapter, USB-C cable and the transfer adapter. What might surprise you, is the extra $100 you have to pay for the extra armor.
AT&T is offering the S8 Active for pre-order, the monthly tariffs are a little higher than the more vulnerable brother, starting at around $28 a month. If you prefer to pay cash, then you will be hit with an $850 bill.
The S8 Active is definitely a good choice for those who need a rugged phone, the higher price is reasonable considering what you are getting for the price. If you really like it you can get two for the price of one.
