BMW launches wireless charging for cars

Who though wireless, as a technology will go this far. Right from wireless networking to charging of our mobile phones, the technology has traveled far, and now cars are even not left out.

The wireless charging for smartphones is almost universal: a few years after being introduced for Android smartphones, Apple decided to take the plunge on the occasion of the launch of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X. BMW also launched recharge wireless … But for its electric range of cars. Very precisely for a particular model. The system allows recharging without the need to plug in the car, thus reducing cable problems.

The BMW 530e iPerformance will be able to charge wirelessly

The device that BMW presented in a video posted on Youtube on September 22, 2017 looks like a simple carpet. It is actually a charging station for a hybrid car: the BMW 530e iPerformance, one of the German manufacturer’s hybrid range, rechargeable models. For now, it is the only model for which the induction recharge mat has been announced.

The carpet plugs into a single 220 volt outlet, which is intended for the European market in the first place. In the United States, where the voltage is 125 V, it cannot function. BMW has not announced a version for the US market yet. For the rest, just place the car over the carpet and the battery charging starts.

A guide system integrated in the on-board computer

The carpet, according to the video presented by BMW, recharges the batteries of the car in 3.5 hours. Charging starts automatically when the battery is placed exactly above the carpet.

This maneuver may seem complicated, since it is a matter of aligning the battery to the belt, vertically, by rolling over the platform. BMW has therefore devised a guidance system in the on-board computer, which makes it possible to carry out this operation with ease.

Remember, the wireless charging feature is an option.
